Insomnium est un groupe de Death Metal Mélodique finlandais originaire de Joennsu. Fondé en 1997, il se compose actuellement de Niilo Sevänen (chant, basse), Markus Vanhala (guitare), Ville Friman (guitare, chant) et Markus Hirvonen (batterie).
Le groupe a réalisé 7 albums à ce jour : In the Halls of Awaiting en 2002, Since the Day It All Came Down en 2004, Above the Weeping World en 2006, Across the Dark en 2009, One For Sorrow en 2011, Shadows Of The Dying Sun en 2014, et Winter’s Gate en 2016.

While We Sleep de Insomnium
Insomnium est un des grands groupes de Death Metal Mélodique actuel. Avec sa large palette sonore, le quatuor sait peindre des paysages envoûtants. Les compositions de Insomnium allient brutalité et mélodie avec finesse, et While We Sleep est un excellent exemple. Vous retrouverez des cris, du chant, une forte ambiance créée par la reverb des guitares et un magnifique solo.
Cette chanson était supposée être le premier single promotionnel de Shadows Of The Dying Sun, mais cela n’a pas été le cas. Parfois le temps vient à manquer, et les musiciens ont dû être très rapides lors du processus de création. En réponse à cet évènement, les paroles traitent du fait de ralentir. Il est important de décélérer afin de vivre cet instant. Cela ne sert à rien de se précipiter, car la vie se déroule maintenant et nous ne pouvons pas retourner en arrière. “We need to slow down“.
I think it was back in the spring of 2013, when Century Media threw out an idea of recording a new single, which wold be released beforehand the actual album. We already had couple of songs pretty much finished but I still tried to come up with another catchy song for this purpose. This song became later While We Sleep. Even though all the people in the band liked it, Ephemeral pulled the longer straw and became the number one single choice. In the hindsight, this was absolutely the right choice, as this song needed a bit more attention and caring to actually fly on its own. The addition of clean vocals was a bit last minute thing; I’ve had this idea for long time but actually had already forgot about it in amidst of all the hurry and Rush. I only remembered this couple of nights before and decided to give it a go. All vocal harmonies were Thrown in spontaneously, and surprisingly, it sounds more coherent and thought of than it actually is. You just need to go with the flow sometimes. Lyrics deal about forgetting to live in this moment when you’re too much concentrated on the future. It’s also about realizing that this is it and there’s no going back. There’s no point of rushing through your life ; It’s important to slow down. – Ville Friman
