MetalZone : Peux-tu te présenter brièvement pour ceux qui ne connaissent pas le groupe ?
Crown The Empire : Salut, je m’appelle Brandon et je joue de la guitare dans Crown The Empire.
MetalZone : Comment te sens-tu vis à vis de la sortie prochaine du nouvel album Sudden Sky ?
Crown The Empire : Le fait qu’on l’ait enfin annoncé et qu’il va bientôt sortir me réjouit. Mais, en même temps, ça me rend nerveux, parce que ça fait plus de 3 ans qu’on n’a rien sorti. Une fois qu’il sera publié et qu’on sera parti en tournée, je me sentirai beaucoup mieux.
MetalZone : Est-ce que tu as une chanson préférée du nouvel album Sudden Sky ?
Crown The Empire : Ma chanson préférée c’est BLURRY (out of place) parce que les paroles me touchent vraiment. Je me souviens que quand nous étions en studio en train d’enregistrer la chanson, j’étais tellement stressé que je communiquais des ondes négatives. J’ai donc dû quitter le studio pour les laisser travailler tranquillement, et une semaine plus tard, notre producteur m’a envoyé la version finie et ils ont assuré ! J’étais en voiture quand je l’ai écoutée, et j’ai été obligé de m’arrêter pour pleurer. Je pense que cette chanson va toucher beaucoup de personnes.
MetalZone : Pourquoi avez-vous choisi la photo de groupe pour la pochette de l’album au lieu de la photo du single Sudden Sky ? Je la trouvais plus éloquente.
Crown The Empire : L’artwork du single ne représente pas l’album dans sa globalité. Un photographe a pris cette photo sur le tournage du clip de Sudden Sky, donc elle représente cette chanson. Pour la pochette de l’album, on voulait un scan 3D de nos corps, et l’insérer dans un environnement alternatif afin d’immortaliser le passé. On a voulu figer le moment où on a fini l’album. Chaque expression faciale, nos habits, nos postures, tout a été réfléchi. Cela représente nos émotions lors de l’enregistrement de Sudden Sky.
MetalZone : Est-ce que tu préfères composer ou partir en tournée ?
Crown The Empire : Composer est un ascenseur émotionnel. J’adore quand une chanson est finie, ou quand on est sur une bonne lancée avec un album, mais dieu sait que c’est stressant. Surtout à ce stade de notre carrière où on se doit encore de prouver des choses. C’est à la fois amusant, excitant et terrifiant. Partir en tournée par contre c’est comme des vacances. Tu as une équipe qui s’occupe de tout pour toi. Tout ce que tu as à faire c’est de te réveiller à l’heure et d’aller jouer une setlist d’une heure. Je pense que la clé est de trouver l’équilibre entre les deux.
MetalZone : Quand vous composez, est-ce que vous commencez avec l’instrumentation puis la voix ? Comment travaillez-vous ?
Crown The Empire : Pour le nouvel album, on a commencé par composer beaucoup de démos instrumentales avec l’un des nos producteurs, Josh Strock. Ensuite, on a amené les démos à notre producteur principal WZRDBLD, et on les a peaufinées en studio. Après on a chanté et trouvé des mélodies, puis des paroles, et ajusté certaines parties instrumentales. J’aime travailler ainsi car sans instrumentation ou sans production, c’est un peu comme chanter dans le vent et ensuite tu es obligé de composer autour. Cela pourrait être intéressant à essayer pour une prochaine fois.
MetalZone : Comment es-tu entré dans le monde de la musique ?
Crown The Empire : J’ai commencé à jouer de la guitare quand j’avais 15 ans. Ma mère m’avait acheté une réplique de Strat pas cher quand j’avais 10 ans, et elle restée à m’attendre dans mon placard pendant 5 ans. J’adorais jouer à Guitar Hero, et à un moment je me suis dit que ça serait cool d’apprendre à jouer de la vraie guitare. Quelques années plus tard, j’ai fondé Crown The Empire et nous faisons de la musique depuis ce jour là.
MetalZone : Pourquoi as-tu choisi de faire de la musique ?
Crown The Empire : Le seul truc qui m’intéressait était la musique. C’est dur à expliquer mais j’avais le sentiment que si je fondais un groupe on allait faire des tournées partout dans le monde. Je me souviens que mes professeurs me disaient que je devais envoyer des dossiers pour aller à l’université, mais je leur répondais que non parce que j’allais faire de la musique. J’étais très naïf et je pense que c’est aussi pour ça que ça a fonctionné. Rien ne m’empêchera de faire ce que je veux. Notre objectif était de jouer au Warped Tour. Je n’aurais jamais cru qu’on y jouerait 4 fois et qu’on ferait des tournées mondiales pendant les 8 années suivantes. Ça a été une sacrée expérience.
MetalZone : Peux-tu partager avec nous ton TOP 3 des artistes et albums les plus écoutés du moment ?
Crown The Empire : En ce moment, je suis dans une phase bizarre parce que je suis concentré sur la promotion du nouvel album. Donc, j’ai surtout écouté notre propre musique, et travailler pour accomplir les tâches nécessaires pour l’album et les tournées à venir. Autrement, j’écoute tout et n’importe quoi. J’écoute du Slipknot au Twenty One Pilots en passant par Juice Wrld. Je pense que de nos jours tout le monde est un peu comme ça à cause du streaming. Le choix est illimité et la musique est super simple d’accès.
MetalZone : Quelle est la chaîne YouTube la plus étrange à laquelle tu es abonné ?
Crown The Empire : Je ne m’abonne pas vraiment à des chaînes YouTube. En général, je regarde les vidéos recommandées, et puis je tombe dans le piège. C’est effrayant, j’arrive à passer des journées entières sur YouTube avec aucune interaction sociale et je suis quand même satisfait de ma vie.
MetalZone : En ce moment, vous avez beaucoup de dates prévues aux États-Unis, et quelques unes en Russie. Quand est-ce que vous comptez passer en France ou en Suisse ?
Crown The Empire : Pour l’instant on n’a pas d’autres dates de prévues parce qu’on se concentre à fond sur la sortie du nouvel album. Dès qu’il est sorti, on commencera à planifier des dates dans d’autres pays. Il y a tellement d’endroits où j’ai envie d’amener cette nouvelle musique.
MetalZone : Pour 3 albums publiés, vous êtes énormes. Qu’est-ce qui fait votre succès en tant que groupe d’après toi ?
Crown The Empire : Je ne pense pas qu’on soit énorme du tout. Je pense que le mot est utilisé à tort et à travers. Si tu remplis des stades partout dans le monde, là ton groupe est énorme. Mais on a réussi à se créer un bon public qui nous permet de partir 9 mois de l’année en tournée, et j’en suis extrêmement reconnaissant. Mon objectif est de continuer à élargir notre fanbase. J’en ai plus rien à faire de ce que font les autres groupes. J’ai appris avec le temps que rien de tout ça n’a d’importance.
MetalZone : Est-ce que tu as une bonne anecdote musicale à nous raconter ?
Crown The Empire : Petite histoire marrante. Lorsqu’on a écrit la chanson what i am du nouvel album, on voulait faire une collaboration avec notre ami Post Malone. À ce moment là, il se produisait au grand festival Coachella, en Californie. Du coup, Andy a pris un Uber pour le rejoindre et lui faire écouter la chanson. Il s’est retrouvé à traîner avec Post, Justin Bieber, et Migos. Malheureusement, on n’a pas eu la collaboration mais ça fait une bonne histoire à raconter.
MetalZone : Vu qu’on est localisé pas loin des Alpes, on pose toujours cette question : Est- ce que tu aimes la fondue ? Ou est-ce que tu as déjà eu l’opportunité d’en manger une ?
Crown The Empire : Non, j’ai jamais eu l’occasion mais ça me tente… amène !
MetalZone : Un dernier mot pour vos fans et nos lecteurs ?

MetalZone : Could you briefly introduce yourself for those who don’t know the band?
Crown The Empire : Hi my name is Brandon, I play guitar in Crown The Empire.
MetalZone : How do you feel about your new album coming up?
Crown The Empire : The fact that we have finally announced it and have a release date is making me so excited. At the same time I’m so nervous because it’s been 3 years since we’ve put out a record. Once it’s out to the world and we are touring off it I’ll feel much better.
MetalZone : Do you have a favorite track off of your new record Sudden Sky?
Crown The Empire : My favorite track would have to be BLURRY (out of place) because the lyrics really hit home. I remember during that time we were in the studio and I had to leave because I was giving off extremely negative vibes which was stressing everyone out. A week later our producer sent me vocals over an instrumental we had been trying to figure out melodies and lyrics for and they NAILED IT. I was driving in my car and had to pull over and cry. I think this song is going to move a lot of people.
MetalZone : Why did you choose to use the “band photo” album artwork instead of the one for the Sudden Sky single? I feel like it was more eloquent.
Crown The Empire : The single art didn’t represent the album as a whole. A photographer took that photo on the set of the Sudden Sky music video so it represents that song. For the album art, we wanted to 3D scan our bodies and put them into an altered environment to conserve the past. We wanted to freeze this moment in time which was right after we finished the album. Every facial expression, our body positions and the clothes we are wearing were thought out in detail. It represents our emotions through the recording process of the album.
MetalZone : Do you prefer composing or touring?
Crown The Empire : Composing is an emotional rollercoaster. I love when a song is done, or when we are on a roll and finishing up an album, but god damn the writing process is stressful. Especially at this stage in our career when we still have a lot to prove. It’s fun, exciting and terrifying all at the same time. Touring on the other hand is like a vacation. You have a crew doing everything for you, all you have to do is wake up and play an hour set. I think a balance of writing and touring is the key.
MetalZone : When you compose, is it music first and then the vocals? How do you guys work?
Crown The Empire : On the new album we started off by writing a ton of instrumentals with one of our producers, Josh Strock. Then we took those to our main producer WZRDBLD and worked them out in the studio. Then we would sing melodies, add lyrics, change up some of the instrumentals. I like doing it this way because without instrumentals or production you’re just kind of singing into the air and then writing around that. That might be interesting to try next time around.
MetalZone : How did you get into music?
Crown The Empire : I started playing guitar when I was 15. My mom has bought me a strat shaped guitar from a pawn shop when I was 10 and it sat in my closet for 5 years. I was super into Guitar Hero at the time so I figured it would be fun to learn the real thing. A couple of years later I started Crown The Empire and we’ve been going ever since.
MetalZone : Why did you choose to form/enter a band?
Crown The Empire : The only thing I cared about was music. It’s hard to explain but I just knew if i started a band that we would be touring the world. I remember my teachers were telling me I needed to apply for colleges and I told all of them no I’m going to be in a band. I was extremely naive but I think that’s why it worked. Nothing was going to stop me from doing exactly what I wanted to do. Our main goal was to get on Warped Tour. I had no idea that somehow we would play that tour 4 times across the United States as well as tour the world for the next 8 years. It’s been a trip man.
MetalZone : Could you give us your TOP 3 most listened artists/albums at the moment?
Crown The Empire : Right now I’m in a weird phase because I’m handling all of the marketing for our new album, so I’ve been listening to so much of my own band coming up with these insane ideas and executing them for the release and our upcoming tour. But in between all of that I’m all over the place. I’ll go from listening to Slipknot to Twenty One Pilots to Juice Wrld. I think that’s how everyone is now a days because streaming. Music options are unlimited at the tip of your fingers.
MetalZone : What is the most random YouTube channel you are subscribed to?
Crown The Empire : I don’t really subscribe to any YouTube channels. Usually I just click on the videos recommended to me which leads me down rabbit holes. It’s scary I can spend days on YouTube with no human interaction and be completely content with life.
MetalZone : Right now you have a lot of dates planned in the U.S. and some in Russia. Do you know when you will come back to France or Switzerland?
Crown The Empire : We have no other tour dates scheduled as of now because we are focusing all our effort on the new album release. As soon as that’s out of the way is when we’ll start planning other countries around the world. There’s so many places I wanna take this new music.
MetalZone : For 3 albums out, you guys are huge, what do you think is a big part of your success as a band?
Crown The Empire : I don’t think we are huge at all. I think that word is Thrown around carelessly without understanding what “huge” really means. If you’re selling out sold out arenas across the entire world, THAT is huge to me. However we have created a fan base and we are able to tour 8-9 months out of the year and for that I’m extremely grateful. My goal is to keep building that fan base. I don’t care what any other band is doing anymore. I’ve learned from doing this for awhile that none of that shit matters.
MetalZone : Do you have a great music related anecdote to share with us?
Crown The Empire : Fun fact. While we were in the studio writing “what i am” off the new album, we wanted to get one of our friends Post Malone to be featured on it. At the time he was played Coachella, this big festival in California. So Andy took an Uber 2 hours out to the festival to show HIM the song. He ended up hanging out with Post, Justin Bieber, and Migos. Unfortunately we didn’t get the collab, but it’s a weird story nonetheless.
MetalZone : As we are located near the Alps, we always ask that question : Do you like cheese fondue? Or have you ever had the opportunity to try it?
Crown The Empire : I’ve never had the opportunity to try it but I’m so Down… bring it on.
